Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or spending a couple of weeks abroad this summer, it’s important to do what you can to make sure that your accounts remain secure on the road.

Follow these tips to keep your finances safe during your summer vacation!

  1. Let your financial institutions know you’ll be traveling before you go. Give your bank and credit card companies a heads up that you’ll be on the move. Without notification, they may mark your charges as fraudulent and lock your card.

  2. Have multiple ways to pay. It’s a good idea to bring multiple payment methods with you just in case one card does get locked, lost or stolen. Have a combination of credit cards, debit cards and some emergency cash – and keep them separate in case of theft!

  3. But try to stick with a credit card, if you can. While you should BRING multiple ways to pay, credit cards are the best method when you’re out of town. It’s much easier to dispute fraudulent credit card charges if your information is stolen.

  4. Set up account alerts. Make sure you have all the apps downloaded for your various financial institutions and set up alerts for your accounts. That way you’ll know of any suspicious charges right when they happen.

  5. Stay alert in public spaces. If you’re a tourist, fumbling around in your bag for your phone, a map or your money can make you a target for pickpockets. Keep an eye out for suspicious characters and never leave your bags or valuables alone.

Many people also keep important items in a hidden money belt or pouch for extra security.
